Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro'
Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro' is one of those plants you can hardly ignore in the garden. It doesn’t just put on a single burst of flowers and then fade away — instead, it keeps delighting you throughout the summer. Its warm, golden-yellow blooms appear from early summer and continue well into autumn.
Like all daylilies, each flower lasts only a single day. But 'Stella d'Oro' more than makes up for this by constantly producing new buds, giving the plant the appearance of almost endless flowering. Thanks to its open, star-shaped blooms, it is also very attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
The flowers are beautifully proportioned at around 8 centimetres across and rise elegantly above the fresh, narrow foliage. Reaching a height of about 40 centimetres, this daylily remains compact and tidy, making it ideal for borders, along paths, in groups, or in pots on a patio or balcony.
Planting instructions for Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro'
Planting in the ground
Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro' is fully winter hardy and can be planted almost year-round, as long as the ground is not frozen. Spring and autumn are the best planting periods, allowing the roots to establish well.
Plant the root ball so that the new green shoots remain just above the soil surface, and keep approximately 30 to 40 centimetres between plants. Water thoroughly after planting.
In pots
'Stella d'Oro' also performs very well in pots. Choose a container with a minimum diameter of 30 centimetres and ensure good drainage. Regular watering is important, especially during warm summer periods.
Location
This daylily prefers a sunny to partially shaded position. The more sun it receives, the more abundant the flowering will be. The soil should be fertile and well-drained; Hemerocallis is tolerant, but does not like prolonged wet conditions.
Caring for Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro'
Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro' is very low-maintenance. Keep the soil slightly moist during dry periods. Removing spent flowers helps keep the plant looking tidy and can encourage continued flowering.
In autumn, the foliage dies back. It can be cut back or left in place until spring to protect the plant. Fresh growth will appear naturally in spring.
Hemerocallis and feeding
For long-lasting and abundant flowering, apply some organic fertiliser or compost in spring. Heavy feeding is not necessary; Hemerocallis is naturally a strong and reliable garden plant.
Winter hardiness
Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro' is fully winter hardy and can overwinter in the ground without protection. It is also hardy in pots, provided the container does not freeze solid for extended periods.
Propagation
After a few years, Hemerocallis 'Stella d'Oro' can be propagated by division. This is best done in spring or after flowering in autumn. Dividing the plant helps maintain vigour and flowering performance.
