Organic light blue Grape Hyacinths
Muscari 'Early Bird' is a particularly early flowering variety of the well-known blue grape hyacinth. It flowers in February, well before most other spring flowers. The compact cluster flowers consist of small, bright blue pearls that develop in a cone-shaped inflorescence.
The flowers appear on top of sturdy stems of about 10 to 15 cm high, often with multiple flower stems per bulb. The narrow leaves are blue-green and protrude slightly above the flowers.
Early nectar source for bees
Thanks to its extremely early flowering, Muscari 'Early Bird' is a valuable nectar source for bees and other early pollinators, at a time when few other flowers are available.
How, where and when do I plant 'Early Bird'?
Plant the flower bulbs between September and January. The correct depth is 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb (approx. 7 cm deep), with a planting distance of approximately 7 cm. In pots this may be closer.
Suitable for well-drained, chalky sandy or loamy soil. In clay soil it is important to improve the soil with compost or sand for good drainage. Plant in a sunny to semi-shaded spot or under deciduous trees.
Care of 'Early Bird'
Give some organic fertilizer when planting. After flowering, the faded flowers can be removed, but leave the foliage until it has died. This helps the bulb to store energy for the next season. 'Early Bird' is suitable for naturalizing in a permanent location and will return for years.
Propagation
After flowering, the bulbs can be dug up and divided in the summer. The small secondary bulbs can be planted again directly from September. Propagation by seed is also possible, although this takes a few years before flowering.
Origin of this grape hyacinth
Muscari 'Early Bird' is a selected cultivar of Muscari 'Armeniacum', originally from South-East Europe and Asia Minor. This variety was specially developed for its extra early flowering.
