Naturally grown daffodil 'Topolino'
The Narcissus 'Topolino' is a botanical daffodil. 'Topolino' means "little mouse" in Italian (and is also the Italian name for Mickey Mouse), probably referring to the small, compact size of the flower. The petals are cream to white, with a large soft yellow trumpet, which bees like to be attracted to. It grows to about 20 to 25 cm high and flowers early in the spring, from March to April. It usually bears one flower per sturdy stem. Perfect for borders, rockeries, flower boxes and natural lawns.
How, where and when do you plant daffodil bulbs?
Plant the flower bulbs from September to January. Use a planting depth of 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb (approx. 8–10 cm deep) and keep a distance of 8–10 cm between the bulbs. In pots they can be placed closer together. Plant in a sunny to semi-shaded spot in well-drained, preferably slightly calcareous sandy or loamy soil. In heavy clay soil it is advisable to add compost or sand for better drainage.
Care
Add some organic fertilizer when planting. After flowering, you can cut off the faded flowers, but leave the foliage until it has completely died. This ensures that the bulb stores enough energy for the next season. 'Topolino' is a strong variety that naturalizes excellently and will return for years in the right location. Add a little organic fertilizer annually in early spring for healthy flowering.
Propagation
The bulbs can be dug up in the summer and stored in a cool, dry place. The small secondary bulbs can be planted separately from September. After a few years, these will also flower. 'Topolino' is excellent for naturalising in a permanent, sunny spot in your garden.
