The botanical tulip Tulipa 'Lilac Wonder' belongs to the bakeri group and is known for its lovely flowers with soft lilac petals and a striking golden yellow heart. The calyx-shaped flowers open on sunny days into a star-shaped flower, with a diameter of about 7 to 10 cm. The flowering takes place in April and makes this wild tulip a true spring jewel.

The 'Lilac Wonder' remains low (up to about 20 cm high) and is therefore perfectly suited for the rock garden, as border planting or to naturalise in the lawn. It is very attractive to bees and other early pollinators, and comes back faithfully every year in a good location.

How, where and when do I plant Tulipa 'Lilac Wonder' flower bulbs?

Plant the flower bulbs of 'Lilac Wonder' between September and January with the point upwards, approximately 7 cm deep and 7 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot or light semi-shade with well-drained, slightly chalky soil. Avoid spots with prolonged wet soil in the summer, as this can cause the bulbs to rot.

In heavier clay soils, drainage can be improved with some coarse sand or compost. This botanical tulip grows best in nutrient-poor to moderately fertile soil that remains dry in summer.

Care

Give a little organic food in early spring. Allow the foliage to die back completely after flowering to allow the bulb to recover. Only remove it after it has completely yellowed. This species can reproduce slightly and naturalises well in the right conditions. It is very hardy and requires little maintenance.
