Organic Fringed Tulips
This crispa tulip, called Tulipa 'Siesta', evokes the image of a relaxed midday nap. With its crystal-like fringed petal edges, it’s a particularly beautiful sight. It belongs to the crispa tulip group.
'Siesta' grows quite tall and produces impressively large white-pink flowers, perfect for a tall vase. You can pair it with a white tulip variety such as 'Royal Virgin' for a lovely, soft effect.
How, where and when do I plant tulip bulbs?
Tulip bulbs need a cold period to grow and bloom well. That’s why it’s important to plant them in autumn, preferably from October. This ensures the bulbs are in the ground over winter and get the cold they need.
When planting, follow this rule of thumb: plant the bulb at a depth of about two to three times its height. For spacing, leave two to three times the width of the bulb between each one.
Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade. Tulips prefer nutrient-rich, fertile soil — ideally loam. If you have sandy soil, mix a bit of clay minerals into the planting hole. For clay soil, adding organic material such as compost helps improve drainage. It’s important the soil remains well-drained, as too much moisture around the bulbs can cause rot.
Care
To nourish the tulip bulbs, you can add organic fertilizer to the soil when planting. Be careful not to overfeed them, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth and weakened flowers.
Once the flowers have faded, cut off the flower heads at the top of the stem so that the bulb’s energy goes into the bulb rather than seed development. Leave the foliage in place because it carries out photosynthesis, allowing the bulb to gather energy for the next year. Allow the foliage to die back completely — usually by July — so that the energy returns to the bulb.
To ensure the bulb produces another large flower next season, carefully lift it from the garden and hang it to dry in a warm, well‑ventilated shed. Handle the bulbs gently during lifting to avoid damage, brush off excess soil, and keep the outer tunic intact. Hang them in a ventilated place to dry.
In autumn you can replant the bulbs in the ground again, following the planting guidelines outlined above.
What if tulip bulbs are left in the ground?
If an organic tulip bulb is left in the ground, you can expect blooms for several years. However, quality declines each year and the risk of diseases such as fire (Botrytis) increases significantly. For this reason, it’s advisable to choose a different spot in the garden each year to prevent disease buildup and weakening.
