Organic Tulipa turkestanica – wild botanical tulip for naturalization
Tulipa turkestanica is a wild botanical tulip with a natural, charming appearance. This early bloomer produces multiple star-shaped flowers per stem (often 3–8), white in colour with a striking yellow heart. The grey-green petals often have a subtle pink or purple tinge on the outside. The flowers open wide in the sun and seem to dance almost floating above the foliage. With a height of only 25 cm, this is an ideal variety for borders or between perennials.
Tulipa turkestanica blooms early in the spring and is very popular with bees and other pollinators. As a wild tulip, it has hardly been bred and stays close to its natural form. It is known for its multiple flowers per stem – quite rare in tulips.
How, where and when do I plant a tulip bulb?
Plant from October, so that the bulb experiences a cold period. Planting depth: 2–3× the height of the bulb. Planting distance: 2–3× the width of the bulb.
Plant in a sunny to semi-shaded spot in well-drained soil. Add clay minerals to sandy soil, and compost or leafmould to heavy clay soil. Do not allow the bulbs to remain wet for long periods.
Care
Give some organic fertilizer when planting. After flowering, remove only the flower head. Let the foliage die off completely so that the bulb can store nutrition for the following year.
What if Tulipa turkestanica remains in the ground?
Unlike large-flowered cultivars, Tulipa turkestanica is very suitable for naturalising. In a sunny, dry spot it spreads well. However, alternate with other species to prevent diseases.
History of the Tulipa turkestanica
This botanical tulip comes from the mountainous regions of Central Asia, particularly historical Turkestan (parts of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan). It grows on steep slopes and grasslands between 1,000 and 3,000 meters in altitude. First described in 1873 by Russian botanist Eduard August von Regel.
