Organic white parrot tulips

The 'White Rebel' tulip is a unique variety with a wild appearance. The flowers are creamy white with fresh green streaks and have curled and ruffled petals, typical of parrot tulips. 'White Rebel' grows to about 40 cm tall and blooms in late spring (April–May). Perfect for borders, containers, or as a cut flower. Since it is organically grown, it fits well in natural or ecological gardens.

How, where, and when do I plant tulip bulbs?

Tulip bulbs need a cold period. That’s why it’s best to plant them in autumn from October onwards, so they spend winter in the ground and get the cold they need. Plant bulbs at a depth of 2 to 3 times their height and space them 2 to 3 times their width apart.

Plant the bulbs in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Tulips prefer nutrient-rich, fertile soil, ideally loam. For sandy soil, mix in some clay minerals at the planting site. For heavy clay, add some organic material to improve drainage. Make sure the soil drains well, as too much moisture around the bulbs can cause rot.

Care

To nourish the tulip bulbs, you can add organic fertilizer to the soil when planting. Avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth and weaker blooms.

After flowering, cut off the spent flowers at the top of the stem so energy goes back into the bulb rather than into seed production. Leave the leaves in place – they perform photosynthesis and help the bulb store energy for next year. Let the foliage die back fully, usually around July.

To get large blooms from 'White Rebel' again, dig up the bulbs once the foliage has died. Handle them carefully to avoid damage. Remove excess soil but leave the outer skin intact. Hang the bulbs in a warm, ventilated place to dry. In autumn, they can be replanted – follow the planting instructions above again.

What if tulip bulbs stay in the ground?

If an organic 'White Rebel' tulip bulb stays in the ground, it may bloom for several years. However, quality tends to decline each year, and the risk of diseases such as tulip fire increases. For this reason, rotate planting locations each year to avoid disease and weakening.
