Collection: Organic wood hyacinths
Organically grown Hyacinthoides hispanica
Hyacinthoides hispanica, also called 'Spanish hyacinths' or 'wood hyacinths', bloom in spring, in April and May. They produce elongated, cylindrical flower clusters about 30 centimeters high, formed by bell-shaped flowers. Each flower consists of six petals. The flowers vary in color including blue, pink and white .
The narrow leaves are elongated and lance-shaped and remain decoratively green for a long time after flowering.
Wood hyacinths overwinter
Spanish hyacinths may sound very exotic, but the flowerbulbs are winter hardy and can even withstand cold temperatures.
Plant wood hyacinths
Bluebells thrive in well-drained, moist soil and prefer part-shade to shady locations.
Plant the bulbs in autumn or early winter at a depth of about 8 to 10 centimeters and also far apart.
Wood hyacinths care
After flowering, it is important to leave the foliage alone until it has completely wilted to allow the bulb to store nutrients for the next growing season. The bluebells return faithfully to the garden every year and multiply rapidly every year.
Bluebells
Spanish hyacinths are often confused with Bluebells, also called 'wild hyacinths' (Hyacinthoides 'Non-Scripta'), but they have some distinguishing features, including the shape of the flower cluster and the hispanica has no scent.
Origin of the Hyacinthoides hispanica
Spanish hyacinths come from western Spain and Portugal, known botanically as Hyacinthoides hispanica, are bulbous plants belonging to the Asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
