Organic Green Asparagus Claws
The Asparagus 'Vegalim' is a green asparagus variety, with its most striking feature being the green color of the stems. Unlike white asparagus, the green variety grows above the ground, where it is exposed to sunlight, allowing photosynthesis to occur. Green asparagus is grown in the same way as white asparagus, but with one important difference: it is not covered with soil, allowing it to develop its green color through exposure to sunlight.
Green asparagus often has a more intense flavor than white asparagus, and is typically more tender and juicy. It contains important nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, and fiber, and is a good source of antioxidants.
Edible
The asparagus grown from Bloemoloog's plants is meant for consumption. Green asparagus can be prepared in various ways, such as roasting, grilling, steaming, or boiling. Since it is more tender than white asparagus, it typically has a shorter cooking time.

How, Where, and When to Plant Asparagus Claws?
The ideal time to plant green asparagus claws is early spring, when the soil has warmed up, but before the asparagus begins its active growth phase.
Dig trenches about 15 to 20 centimeters deep and leave at least 1 meter of space between the trenches. Place the asparagus claws with the buds facing upward and leave about 30 to 45 centimeters of space between each claw. Cover the claws with 5 to 8 centimeters of soil. As the asparagus grows, gradually add more soil until the trench is level with the soil surface.
If you only want to try planting a single asparagus, plant it at the same depth, but without a trench.
Water the asparagus beds well after planting to help settle the soil and give the asparagus a good start. It is advisable to mulch the beds to retain moisture, reduce weed growth, and stabilize the soil temperature.
Location
Asparagus 'Vegalim' grows best in full sun and well-draining soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Sandy soil is ideal, but light loamy soil is also suitable. Avoid heavy clay soils.
Care for the Asparagus Plant
Asparagus needs regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water deeply to keep the roots well-hydrated. In the fall, cut the remnants of the plant down to the ground to prevent pests and diseases.
Asparagus beds can last for decades if well-maintained. Continue to feed the plants and ensure good soil health.

Harvesting Green Asparagus
Start harvesting only in the second year after planting the asparagus claws. In the first year, it is important to let the plants grow and become stronger.
The harvest begins when the stems reach the desired height, typically between 20 and 25 centimeters. Simply cut them off with a knife just above the soil surface. The harvest season for green asparagus is usually longer than for white asparagus. It begins in spring and can continue into early summer, depending on growth conditions and climate.
Propagating Asparagus Plants
Asparagus claws can become thicker over time. You can choose to split older plants to obtain new root cuttings. Replant the root cuttings in the desired location.
Origin of the Asparagus Plant
Asparagus is an ancient vegetable that has been cultivated for thousands of years, probably originating from the coastal regions of Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans valued asparagus both for culinary and medicinal purposes. It was considered a delicacy and had healing properties, such as a positive effect on the kidneys.
Asparagus spread throughout Europe and was cultivated by Roman emperors. This tradition continued in the Middle Ages and beyond.
