Organic orange calla lily

Many also know it under the name 'calla lily', 'Zantedeschia' or 'arum lily'. The Calla 'Orange Alert' is a large-flowered cultivar with orange/yellow flamed flowers with wide dotted leaves. It grows to a height of about 50 centimeters in a pot and grows a little taller in the garden to a height of about 70 centimeters with slightly larger flowers. It produces approximately 3-5 flowers per tuber per year and blooms from June to September.

Its flowers are actually leaves that curl up to form a calyx. That makes the calla unique! The leaves are often dotted and also differ in shape. One species has narrow, elongated leaves and the other species has somewhat broader leaves. The calla is available in many colors. The bright color of the bract attracts insects that fertilize the flowers.

How, where, and when do I plant calla tubers?

The best location for a calla is in partial shade, where it blooms for months. Plant the tuber in nutrient-rich soil and ensure good drainage to prevent water accumulation around the tubers, which can lead to rot.

The calla tuber is formed by clusters of tubers. Sometimes green points are already visible, and it is easy to see what is above and below. If not, plant the tubers with the round side up and the flat side down. Cover the tuber with 5 to 10 centimeters of soil. The tuber develops roots at the top, so it needs some soil at the top of the tuber. Space them 10 centimeters apart. For container planting, they can be planted slightly closer together.

Indoor pre-growth

From March, the tubers can be pre-grown indoors. Water sparingly and move the plant outdoors on frost-free days.

Outdoor in the Garden

After the last frost, usually after the Ice Saints (May 15), the risk of frost is minimal, the tubers can be planted outdoors in the garden or in pots. Water the soil regularly to prevent it from drying out, but avoid excessive moisture, as it can cause the tubers to rot.

Tip: Plant the tubers in groups of at least three with a distance of about 15cm between them for a beautiful full result.

Care for organic calla

Remove faded flowers to stimulate new blooms. Hold the plant gently at the base to avoid accidentally pulling out the whole calla tuber.

After flowering, the plant naturally dies off. Let the leaves die off completely so that the energy returns to the tuber. Protect them from light frost in winter; they can tolerate no more than -10 degrees Celsius in the ground. In severe frost, they should be dug up and stored frost-free in a dry and cool place. The advantage of digging them up is that the tuber can be divided every year, as it gets larger each year.

For potted plants, we recommend storing the entire pot frost-free and not providing water in winter.

Origin

The calla originates from South Africa. The meaning of calla is 'beauty' and it symbolizes purity, sympathy and cleanliness. In Greek and Roman times they mistook this flower for a chalice with which they toasted, so the flowers were compared to celebrations.
