Organic yellow/green viridiflora tulips
The Tulipa 'Formosa' is a special viridiflora tulip that stands out because of its unique play of colours. The petals are soft yellow with green flames, a characteristic of this tulip class. As it ripens, the flower gets a subtle pink blush on the edges.
'Formosa' grows on sturdy stems of about 40 to 50 cm high and blooms in the second half of spring, around the end of April to the beginning of May. The flowers retain their shape and colour for a long time, both in the garden and in a vase, which is why this tulip is also popular as a cut flower.
Because of its special flowers, 'Formosa' combines beautifully with other pastel-coloured spring bloomers such as Camassia, blue grape hyacinths or white ornamental onions. It also looks great in pots.
How, where and when do I plant tulip bulbs?
Plant the flower bulbs in the fall (October–December), so that they get a cold period. Keep a depth of 10 cm, with a planting distance of about 10 to 15 cm. Choose a sunny to semi-shaded spot.
Viridiflora tulips like well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. In clay soil, it is advisable to add compost or sand to improve drainage. In sandy soil, you can add some clay minerals for better nutrition.
Care
Provide organic fertilizer when planting. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back completely for renewed flowering the following year. For best flower quality, the bulbs can be dug up in June/July, dried and replanted in the fall.
Although 'Formosa' is theoretically perennial, we recommend changing planting locations each year to avoid disease pressure. Flower quality may decline if the bulbs remain in the ground.
