Organic white ornamental onion

Allium 'Cowanii' , also known as 'white ornamental onion' is a perennial bulbous plant that grows from a small, oval flowerbulb. The plant produces narrow, linear leaves that grow to about 6-10 inches long. The flower stem can grow to a height of about 30-40 centimeters with flowers that are white in color. The individual flowers have six petals with prominent stamens.

The flowering period of Allium 'Cowanii' is in late spring and early summer. It can be used in rock gardens, borders and flower beds. The plant also attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to gardens aimed at promoting biodiversity.

How, where and when do I plant flowerbulbs of Allium 'Cowanii'?

An Allium 'Cowanii' flowerbulb needs a cold period. It is therefore advisable to plant it in the ground in the autumn, between October and January. The correct planting depth is approximately 2 to 3 times the size of the bulb itself, and the recommended planting distance is also 2 to 3 times the width of the bulb. Allium 'Cowanii' thrives best in a position in full sun or light shade. For optimal growth and flowering, it is ideal to plant it in a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, preferably a calcareous sandy soil.

Care of the allium

Remove spent flowers by cutting them off at the top of the stem and allow the rest of the stem and leaves to die naturally. If you want to propagate the flowerbulbs, you can remove them from the ground in July. Then let the bulbs dry and store them in a warm place until October, when you can plant them again. The flowerbulbs naturally naturalize. They can also be left in place in the summer. For optimal results, provide annual organic food.

Origin

Allium 'Cowanii' originally comes from the mountainous areas of Turkey and Iran, but is even found in Portugal. This plant species is native to those regions and grows naturally in the specific climatic conditions and soil types of those areas. From there it has spread to other parts of the world, mainly as an ornamental plant grown in gardens for its decorative flowers.
