Organic Abyssinian sword lily
The Gladiolus 'Calllianthus' is another name for Acidenthera 'Murielae'. It is commonly known as 'Abyssinian sword lily'. It blooms in mid-summer and grows to about 60 centimeters tall with white, star-shaped flowers.
The flowers are about 7 centimeters wide and each consist of six petals with a dark red star-shaped heart. It produces 2 to 3 wonderfully scented, downward-hanging flowers per stem and long, narrow leaves of half a meter high grow from the tuber, which remain green until the first frost.
Plant it in the center of the border or in a pot on the balcony.
How, where and when do I plant tubers of Abyssinian sword lily?
Indoor pre-growth
An Abyssinian sword lily is only slightly resistant to frost. This allows the tubers to be grown indoors from March onwards. This gives a head start in growth and the plant therefore bloom earlier. The plants can be put outside after the ice saints (May 15), or earlier if the weather is good, but be careful of night frost, then they will have to go back inside at night.
Outside in the garden
If you choose to wait until after frost before planting the gladiolus tubers, it is best to do so until May 15. From then on, the tubers can be planted in the ground without any risk of frost and they will bloom at the end of the summer.
Plant the tuber 2 to 3 times as high as the tuber is underground (about 10 centimeters deep) and keep a distance of 5 to 10 centimeters from tuber to tuber.
The planting time is until June.
Location
An Abyssinian gladiolus likes warmth, so it prefers a sunny location in a nutrient-rich, water-permeable, loam or sandy soil. With clay soil we recommend adding some organic material to the planting hole. Plant it in a sheltered spot from the wind.
Care of the Abyssinian sword lily
Water the plant regularly during the growth and flowering phase so that it does not dry out on hot days. After flowering, the leaf dies completely. It is best to remove the tubers from the ground before frost and store them in a dry, frost-free place.
We recommend Bio Kultura for organic potting soil, plant food and other soil improvers!
Propagation
The tubers multiply underground. Separate the tubers and plant them separately in the new year.
Origin of the Abyssinian sword lily
The name; Abyssinian sword lily comes from the old name for Ethiopia which is; Abyssinia. There they bloom in mountains at altitudes of 2000 meters. It is an uncrossed species from the Iris family.
