Organically grown hyacinths

The hyacinth family and its followers are very popular with the Florist because of their beautiful properties. We offer a wide range of choices, including normal large-flowered hyacinths with a wonderful scent, suitable for both indoor and outdoor flowering. In addition, we have Spanish hyacinths that have a slightly more refined appearance, but are not suitable for indoor flowering. Another interesting option is the Oriental star hyacinth , also known as Scilla 'Siberica' or the Puschkinia , also called the tube hyacinth , because of the small tubes in the flowers. We have scented and non-scented varieties, but they all have one thing in common: they are hardy and come back faithfully year after year.

Hyacinths indoors

For indoor hyacinth blooms it is important to first put the bulbs in the refrigerator for 9 weeks, so that they experience the cold period they need to be able to bloom. This process is called vernalization.

Plant the flower bulbs in a pot by December 6th at the latest for flowering during the Christmas holidays and afterwards, or plant them later for later flowering indoors. This way you can enjoy the beautiful hyacinth flowers in your home for a long time.

Indoor tip: Keep them away from fruit. Fruit gives off ethylene gas which makes the flowers fade faster.

How, where and when do I plant a hyacinth flower bulb?

A hyacinth needs a cold period so it is planted in the ground from September to January. The planting depth is 2 to 3 times the height of the flower bulb itself and the planting distance is 2 to 3 times the width of the flower bulb itself. Unless you plant them in pots. Then the flower bulbs can be closer together and possibly even come a bit above the ground, just because those bulbs are so beautiful! (In that case, press them back into the ground every now and then because otherwise the roots of the flower bulb will push the flower bulb upwards!)

Hyacinths thrive best in sun or partial shade, in well-drained soil. A light to moderately sandy soil is ideal for hyacinths. This type of soil allows excess water to drain easily, reducing the risk of root rot.

Hyacinth care

For the best results, remove the bulbs from the ground in early summer and store them in a warm place, such as a shed. In October, the flower bulb is then replanted with some organic food. The flower bulb will also flower again if it remains in the ground after flowering, but will flower less richly from year to year.

Propagation

The flower bulbs multiply via small brood bulbs. Remove the small bulbs after flowering and replant them separately in the autumn. The small bulbs are after about 4 years just as big as the flower bulb that we supply you, then they give optimal flowering.

Origin of the hyacinth

The Hyacinthus orientalis is the original species and originates from the Eastern Mediterranean area to Central Asia. It was first described in 1557 by Carolus Clusius . The color blue is the original color.

Crocuses are small bulbous plants with striking flowers in shades of purple, yellow and white. They are often the first flowers to appear in the spring. Hyacinths have fragrant flowers in various colours, such as pink, purple, blue and white. They are often planted in borders, flower beds or pots.

    When you choose organic flower bulbs that bloom in the spring, you can be sure that no chemicals or pesticides end up in the garden. These pesticides are harmful to bees and ensure that bees can no longer find their way to their nesting place.     When do you plant spring bulbs?

    The spring flowering bulbs are planted from autumn to January. Flower bulbs that need to be taken out of the ground in the summer after flowering are taken out of the ground from the end of July and stored until the new planting time in autumn.

    What to do after flowering

    When spring bloomers have finished blooming, cut off the wilted flowers at the top of the flower stem. Let the rest of the plant die back naturally, so that it can still receive maximum energy from the sun.

    How do you store spring bulbs?

    If you have purchased flower bulbs from us and had them delivered to your home and you want to leave the flower bulbs for a while, we advise you to open the box and store them in a ventilated, cool place until you want to plant them in the ground.

    Flower bulbs that you take out of the ground after flowering, you store in a warm place in the shed, for example. To prevent mice from eating the bulbs during that period, you can also hang the flower bulbs in a bag.
