Organic poet's daffodils
The Narcissus poeticus 'Recurvus' is one of the most special daffodils because of its rarity, wonderfully intense scent, late flowering time and brightly colored small crown, which runs from green to yellow on the inside, to orange/red on the outside. It has bright white, shiny petals that are slightly turned back. It is also called 'white daffodil', 'poet's daffodil' or 'pheasant's eye' and is one of the last flowering daffodils. It grows to about 40 centimeters high with one or more bluish-green flower stems per bulb and narrow long leaves with the flowers still above and has one large flower on a flower stem. She is the last flowering daffodil that blooms for about 3 weeks in the period April and May.
Due to its long flowering period, it is very suitable as a cut flower, it smells wonderful and pollinators such as bees can easily access the nectar through the open crown.
Combine it with Hyacinthoides hispanica or Tulipa 'Red Impression' for a beautiful effect.
How, where and when do I plant a daffodil flowerbulb?
An organic daffodil flowerbulb needs a cold period, so plant it in the ground from September to January. The planting depth is 2 to 3 times the height of the flowerbulb itself and the planting distance is 2 to 3 times the width of the flowerbulb itself. When planting in pots, the flowerbulbs may be planted closer together and may extend half above the ground for a decorative effect. However, after flowering, the flowerbulbs should be planted back in the garden, while maintaining the planting depth and spacing discussed.
Plant the Narcissus poeticus 'Recurvus' in a sunny to semi-shaded location in your garden, pot or lawn. Plant them in groups in nutrient-rich, slightly moist soil. This versatile flower not only thrives in sandy soil, but also in clay soil.
Daffodil bulbs are poisonous, which is why they are avoided by rodents such as voles. Use them as a natural protection for other flowerbulbs by planting them around and between the other bulbs.
Care of the poeticus daffodil
Provide organic nutrition during planting. Cut off the spent flowers at the top and let the rest of the foliage die. Only cut it off when the leaf has completely dried out. The Narcissus poeticus 'Recurvus' is a true stinzen plant that naturalizes well. Provided it is in the right location, it will faithfully return every year. Provide organic food annually for optimal results.
Propagation
For propagation, the flower bulb can be dug out at the beginning of summer. The flower bulb is dried and stored in a warm place. They can be planted again from September. Plant the small bulbs separately and provide organic nutrition so that the small flower bulbs grow quickly.
Origin of the poeticus daffodil
The Narcissus poeticus is likely one of the first daffodils to be cultivated. This species is native to Europe, particularly mountainous regions such as the Alps, Pyrenees, and the Balkans. In England, it was known as the "pheasant's eye" due to the colors of the corona, which resemble a pheasant's eye. The Narcissus poeticus was brought to Northwestern Europe by plant collectors as early as the 16th century. Carolus Clusius, a Dutch botanist, introduced this flower to the Netherlands around 1600, laying the foundation for the modern daffodil industry. The 'Recurvus' variety is a later selection with strongly recurved petals.
The poeticus has been naturalized in the Netherlands for centuries. It is very rare but can still be found along riverbanks. View the map here to see where it occurs in the wild in the Netherlands.
