Organic Cynara scolymus 'Green Globe' – Artichoke roots
The Cynara scolymus 'Green Globe' is a popular artichoke variety, known for its large, round flower heads and delicious, edible hearts. These organic roots ensure a strong and healthy plant that can grow for years in a vegetable garden or ornamental garden. The artichoke is not only a culinary delicacy, but also a beautiful plant with impressive gray-green leaves and purple flowers.
How, where and when do I plant organic artichoke roots?
Planting time
The roots of Cynara scolymus 'Green Globe' are best planted in early spring (March-April), as soon as the risk of severe frost has passed. When growing indoors, you can start earlier and move the plants outside later.
Location
Artichokes like a sunny and sheltered location in nutritious, well-drained soil. A sandy or loamy soil with sufficient compost or organic fertilizer gives the best results.
Planting the roots
Dig a large planting hole of about 10-15 cm deep. Place the root horizontally with the growing points upwards and cover it lightly with soil. Keep a planting distance of about 80-100 cm, so that the plants have enough space to develop.
Caring for the artichoke plant
Keep the soil around the plant slightly moist, especially during dry periods. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the roots from extreme temperatures. Feed regularly, such as organic fertilizer or compost, for healthy growth.
Harvesting artichokes
The first artichoke flower buds can be harvested in the second year of growth, usually in summer. Cut the buds before they fully open for the best flavor. Allow a few flowers to bloom for pollinators and an extra decorative effect in the garden.
Winter protection
In temperate climates the plants can be overwintered with a thick mulch or straw covering. In cold areas it is advisable to dig up the roots in the autumn and store them frost-free for replanting in the spring.
Giving back to nature
Remains of the dead plant can be incorporated into the soil as natural fertilizer, which contributes to a healthy soil structure and returns nutrients to nature.
Origin of the artichoke
The artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a descendant of the thistle-like wild artichoke and has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region for centuries. In addition to its culinary value, it is also appreciated for its ornamental appearance in the garden.
