Organic White Dahlia with Pink Accents

The Dahlia 'Edge of Joy' is a semi-double white dahlia with dark pink accents. Its open heart allows insects to reach the nectar, making the 'Edge of Joy' very bee-friendly. The plant grows to about 60 centimetres high and has green leaves. The medium-sized flowers are a beautiful addition to borders or flower arrangements.

The Dahlia 'Edge of Joy' blooms for an incredibly long time, up to 100 days a year, because new flowers continue to grow as faded ones are removed. A true sea of flowers late in the season, when most plants have already finished blooming.

How, Where, and When to Plant Organic Dahlia Tubers

Indoor pre-growth

A Dahlia 'Edge of Joy' is not winter hardy. Tubers can be started indoors from March to give them a head start in growth, allowing earlier flowering. The plants can be moved outdoors after the Ice Saints (15 May), or earlier if the weather permits, but they must be protected from night frost by bringing them inside at night if necessary.

Outdoor Planting

If you choose to plant the dahlia tubers directly outdoors after the frost, it is best to do so by May 15. From then on, the tubers can be safely planted in the ground and will flower approximately 60–90 days later.

Plant the dahlia tuber with its old flower stem from the previous year facing upwards, about 2–3 centimetres below the ground. Maintain a distance of 50 centimetres between tubers. The planting season lasts until June.

Preferred Location

Dahlias thrive in a sunny spot with nutrient-rich, well-drained, preferably calcareous sandy soil. The Dahlia 'Edge of Joy' grows to about half a metre high with medium-sized flowers. This makes it unlikely to require support or a sheltered spot. For potted plants, use a pot at least 40 centimetres wide to prevent it from drying out quickly in summer.

Dahlia Topping

Topping a dahlia stimulates growth and encourages the plant to become more compact and full. Top dahlias during their active growth stage, typically when they have at least 2–4 pairs of leaves.

Use a sharp, clean pair of pruning shears to cut the stem just above a leaf node. Remove any flower buds below the topped area to help the plant focus its energy on developing side branches. After topping, the dahlia will grow side branches from the leaf axils, resulting in a more floriferous plant.

Care

Keep the soil of the Dahlia 'Edge of Joy' consistently moist, as dry soil can hinder growth and flowering. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Dahlias will flower until the first frost. After flowering, cut the plant back to the ground.

Protect tubers planted in the ground from light frost by covering them with leaves. For severe frost, store the tubers in a frost-free, dry location. Digging up the tubers allows for annual division, ensuring continued growth and propagation. Feed dahlias multiple times a year for optimal growth, as they are fast-growing plants that require plenty of nutrients.

For organic potting soil, plant food, and other soil enhancers, we recommend Bio Kultura.

Propagation

In autumn, the tubers continue to grow and should not be removed from the ground too early. Just before the first frost is the ideal time. Tubers can be split immediately or in spring. Spring splitting has the advantage of visible growth points, making it easier to determine where to divide the tuber.

Edibility

All parts of the Dahlia 'Edge of Joy' are edible if grown organically. The tuber tastes like carrots, and the flowers can garnish salads or decorate and flavour a carafe of water.

Origin

Dahlias originate from Mexico and have been grown in European gardens since 1615. Initially cultivated for consumption, they became popular as ornamental plants due to their beauty, resulting in one of the most diverse plant species globally.
