Organic decorative Dahlia 'Pinkpop'

The Dahlia 'Pinkpop' is a beautiful organically grown decorative dahlia with almost ball-shaped flowers in a beautiful pink color. The flowers can grow up to 10 centimeters wide and 1 plant gives about 10 to 15 flowers per year. With a height of about 80 cm, this dahlia is a striking addition to the border and perfectly suited for both garden planting and cut flowers.

The Dahlia 'Pinkpop' blooms for a long time, up to 100 days a year, because new flowers continuously appear when the faded ones are removed. This ensures a beautiful sea of flowers late in the season, when many other plants have already finished blooming.

How, where and when do I plant organic dahlia tubers?

Indoor pre-growth

The Dahlia 'Pinkpop' is not winter hardy. This means that the tubers can be grown indoors from March. This gives a growth boost and ensures earlier flowering. The young plants can be moved outside after the Ice Saints (15 May), or earlier in good weather. Do watch out for night frost; in cold weather they must be brought back inside temporarily.

Outside in the garden

If you wait to plant until after the frost, you can do so from 15 May. From then on, the tubers can safely go into the ground and will flower about 60 to 90 days later. Plant the tuber with the old flower stem upwards, about 2 to 3 cm below the ground, and keep a distance of 50 cm between the tubers. The planting period runs until June.

Location

The Dahlia 'Pinkpop' prefers a sunny spot in a nutritious, well-drained soil, preferably with a light chalky composition. Due to its compact height of 80 cm it does not need support, but a sheltered spot is recommended.
For potted plants, a pot of at least 40 cm wide is recommended so that the plant does not dry out too quickly.

Dahlias topping

Topping a dahlia stimulates growth and makes the plant fuller and more compact. This is usually done when the plant has developed at least 2 to 4 pairs of leaves.

Look at the top pairs of leaves and cut the stem just above a leaf node with a sharp, clean pair of pruning shears. This will help the plant to put energy into developing side branches, resulting in a fuller, more floriferous plant.

Dahlia care

Keep the soil moist at all times, but not too wet. Too dry soil can affect growth and flowering.
During flowering it is important to remove faded flowers so that new flowers continue to come. After flowering, in the autumn, it is best to let the plant die back completely before pruning it back.

What to do with dahlias in autumn?

Protect the tubers planted in the open ground in the winter with leaves against light frost. In case of severe frost they can best be stored frost-free in a dry place. Digging out has the advantage that the tubers can be divided annually.

Dahlias and nutrition

The dahlia is a fast growing plant that needs regular feeding. Give organic fertilizer several times a year for optimal growth and flowering.
For organic potting soil, plant food and soil improvers we recommend Bio Kultura .

Giving back to nature

In the fall, the dead plant parts can be worked into the soil as natural fertilizer. This helps enrich the soil and reduces waste.

Propagating Dahlias

In the autumn, the tubers continue to grow. Do not take them out of the ground too early if you want to propagate them. The best time is just before the first frost. Tubers can be divided immediately, but also in the spring, when growth points are visible. This makes it easier to divide the tuber correctly.

Edible

All of the Dahlia 'Pinkpop' is edible. The tuber has a slightly carroty flavour, and the flowers can be used as a garnish in salads or in a carafe of water for decoration and a subtle flavour.

Origin of the dahlia

Dahlias originate from Mexico and have been found in European gardens since 1615. They were first grown as food tubers, but their beauty led to their popularity as ornamental plants, making them one of the most diverse plant species in the world.
