Organic Dark-Leaved Dahlia

The Dahlia 'Pride One' is a dark-leaved variety with medium-sized velvet red flowers. The flowers are formed by a single ring of petals and have an open center, making them easily accessible to insects such as bees, which makes the Pride One an excellent choice for the garden. The flower stems grow to about 60 centimeters, making them ideal for the middle of the border, and they also produce excellent cut flowers. The 'Pride One' blooms for an incredibly long time, up to 100 days per year, as numerous new flowers appear when the spent blooms are removed. It creates a true sea of flowers late in the season, when most other plants have already finished blooming.

How, Where, and When to Plant Organic Dahlia Tubers

Starting Indoors

The Dahlia 'Pride One' is not frost-hardy. Therefore, the tubers can be started indoors from March onwards. This gives them a growth advantage, allowing the dahlias to bloom earlier. The plants can be moved outdoors after the ice saints (around May 15) or even earlier if the weather allows, but be cautious of night frost—if frost is expected, bring the plants back indoors at night.

Planting Outdoors

If you choose to wait to plant the dahlia tubers until after the frost, the best time is until May 15. After this, the tubers can safely be planted in the ground and will bloom approximately 60 to 90 days later. Plant the tuber with the old flower stem from last year facing upwards, about 2 to 3 centimeters below the soil, and space each tuber about half a meter apart.

Planting is possible until June.

Location

Dahlias prefer a sunny location in nutrient-rich, well-drained, preferably chalky sandy soil.
The Dahlia 'Pride One' grows to 60 centimeters tall and has medium-sized flowers, so they do not need staking.

For pot cultivation, it is best to use a pot at least 40 centimeters wide to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly during the summer.

Pinching Dahlias

Pinching a dahlia is a technique used to stimulate growth and make the plant more compact and fuller. Dahlias are typically pinched when they reach a certain height, usually when they are in the active growth phase. We recommend allowing at least 2 to 4 pairs of leaves to grow before pinching.

A leaf node is the point where a leaf is attached to the stem. Look for the uppermost leaf pairs on the stem. Use a sharp, clean pruning shear and cut the stem just above a leaf node. Make a clean cut to avoid damaging the plant. If there are flower buds below the pinched area, you can remove them as well. This helps the plant invest more energy into developing side branches. After pinching, the dahlia will start developing side branches from the leaf axils, resulting in a plant with more flowers.

Care

Keep the soil of the Dahlia 'Pride One' consistently moist. Dry soil can cause problems in growth and flowering.
During the flowering period, remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms. The dahlia will bloom until the first night frost. Cut the plant back to the ground. Protect the tubers planted in the ground with leaves during the winter against light frost. In case of severe frost, they should be stored in a frost-free, dry place. The advantage of digging up the tubers is that they can be divided each year.

Feed the plant several times a year for optimal results. The dahlia is a fast-growing plant that requires a lot of nutrients.
For organic potting soil, plant food, and other soil enhancers, we recommend Bio Kultura!

Giving Back to Nature

In autumn, the remains of the dead plant can be cut back and worked into the soil as fertilizer. This gives back to nature and keeps your green bin available for kitchen vegetable waste.

Propagation

In autumn, the tubers continue to grow well. Do not remove the tubers from the ground too early for propagation. Just before the first frost is the best time. The tubers can be divided immediately, or this can also be done in spring. The advantage of splitting in spring is that small growth points are already visible, making it easier to identify where to split the tuber.

Edible

Everything from the dahlia is edible. The tuber has a root-like taste, and the flower can be used to garnish a salad or in a carafe with water, for decoration and to flavor the water.

Origin

Dahlias originally come from Mexico and have been found in European gardens since 1615. Initially, they were grown for their edible tubers, but once it was discovered how beautiful they can be as ornamental plants, they became one of the most diverse plant species in the world, with many cultivars.
