Organic imperial crown

The imperial crown is a plant that grows from an impressive flower bulb. The thick, unbranched flower stems can grow up to 70 centimeters high. What makes this plant special is that the narrow pointed leaves grow both along the flower stem and on top of the hanging flowers.

The flower stem of the Fritillaria imperialis 'Rubra Maxima' has a dark color. The leaves cover about 1/3 of the flower stem at the bottom. The famous imperial crown consists of 5 to 12 impressive, hanging bell-shaped flowers in a striking orange color, crowned with beautiful overhanging green leaves. With a flowering time of about 6 weeks, this plant is a real eye-catcher in the garden, especially early in the spring.

The Imperial Crown does well in the garden but also in pots and is excellent for cutting cut flowers. The entire flower stem with leaves can be cut off.

Combine with tulips or with low early bloomers such as blue grape hyacinths .

The flowers produce drops of nectar that bees, butterflies and other insect helpers love. It has a honey-like taste that you can taste yourself!

How, where and when do I plant imperial crown flower bulbs?

The fritillaria flower bulbs are best planted from the end of September. Plant it about 2 to 3 times as deep as the flower bulb itself is high and the same applies in terms of distance; Maintain 2 to 3 times the width of the flower bulb. The flower bulbs of the imperial crown contain the remaining holes from the stems of the previous year. The flower bulbs are best planted horizontally, with the flower stem hole to the side so that no water runs into the hole of the flower bulb. This way you avoid rot and can enjoy this beautiful spring bloomer every year.

Care

Plant the bulb in a good, nutrient-rich, humus-like and water-permeable soil. With clay soil, mix in a lot of sand and possibly a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the planting hole so that water can drain even better. As soon as the shoot of the plant appears above the ground in the spring, give the plants some organic nutrition for an even better result.

The spent flowers are cut off at the top and the rest of the plant is left to die, so that the strength of the green returns to the bulb. The flower bulbs can remain in the ground during the summer, but if they become too crowded after a few years due to propagation, they are best dug out and distributed to other places. The flower bulbs are then stored in a warm place in the shed during the summer and replanted in October.

Moles and voles

Moles and voles disappear from the garden because they do not like the sulphurous terpene that the bulb produces. In some species the scent smells stronger on the flower bulb than in others. The Fritillaria 'Rubra Maxima', on the other hand, has an intensely sharp odor on the flower bulb.

Origin of the Fritillaria imperialis

The Imperial Crown is one of the first cultivated flower bulbs ever. She comes from the area from Turkey to the Kashmir mountains.

The plant has been depicted in paintings for many centuries, but the flower can also be admired as an image on tiles in many temples. According to the stories, the flowers bowed to Jesus as he was on his way to Golgotha in the garden of Gethsemane. When Jesus walked by, all the flowers bowed to him except the imperial crown, which remained arrogantly upright. An angel descended and thundered the flower. The then white flower blushed with shame and immediately let her flowers hang and out of respect they hung forever and because the sweet nectar drops look like tears it seems as if she will also continue to cry forever.

It symbolizes majesty and wealth, as the flower bulb propagates poorly.
