Organic soft pink gladioli
The Gladiolus 'Adrenalin' is a striking, soft pink gladiolus. It is also called sword lily because of the shape of the plant. In midsummer, it produces 10 to 15 flowers per tuber, approximately 10 centimetres wide, on a stem of 120 centimetres high. The flowers are tubular and are in an upright raceme. Each flower consists of four broad sepals and three or four smaller petals, which together form a calyx. The long flower spikes rise above the leaves, making them a prominent eye-catcher in the garden . The leaves are sword-shaped, narrow and glossy, which contributes to the graceful appearance of the plant. They form a basal rosette around the stem and provide a decorative background for the flowers.
The 'Adrenalin' gladiolus attracts bees and bumblebees and is very suitable as a cut flower. Plant them in groups or in a row in the garden, about 50 bulbs fit on a square meter.
How, where and when do I plant gladiolus corms?
Indoor pre-growth
The 'Adrenalin' gladiolus is not winter hardy. This allows the tubers to be started indoors from March onwards. This gives them a head start in growth and the gladioli will flower earlier. The plants can be put outside after the Ice Saints (15 May), or earlier if the weather is good, but watch out for night frost, as they will then have to go back inside at night.
Outside in the garden
If you decide to wait to plant the gladiolus corms until after the frost, it is best to do so up to and including 15 May. From then on, the corms can be planted in the ground without any risk of frost and will flower at the end of the summer.
The planting depth is 2 to 3 times the height of the tuber (about 15 centimeters deep) and the planting distance is 2 to 3 times the width of the tuber.
The planting season is until June.
Location
A gladiolus likes warmth, so it prefers a sunny spot in a nutritious, well-drained loam or sandy soil. In the case of clay soil, we recommend adding some organic material to the planting hole. Plant the gladiolus in a sheltered spot against the wind.
Care
Water the plant regularly during the growth and flowering phase so that it does not dry out on warm days. After flowering, the leaves die off completely. Before the frost, the tubers should be removed from the ground and stored in a dry, frost-free place. They are perennial. Plant the tubers in a different piece of ground each year, so that you prevent soil fungi such as dry rot and can enjoy the tubers for longer.
For organic potting soil, plant food and other soil improvers we recommend Bio Kultura !
Propagation
The tubers multiply underground, often with very small brood bulbs that can be discarded. When the tuber has divided, the individual parts can be separated and planted separately in the new year.
Origin
The sword lily is native to South Africa and is the largest genus in the iris family. It occurs in various places, including Southern Europe, Asia and West Africa. The name Gladiolus is derived from the Latin word 'gladius', which means 'sword'.
