How, where and when do I plant hyacinth flowerbulbs?

Plant hyacinth bulbs in the fall in a sunny or semi-shaded spot in well-drained soil. Hyacinths thrive best in loose, fertile soil that is not too wet. Make sure the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot.

Make sure the bulb is planted about three times as deep as its own height. Keep 1 bulb of space for planting distance. This way they grow nice and compact against each other and it gives a nice full effect.

Tips: You can also place the flowerbulbs in our paper bag in the refrigerator for 9 weeks before planting them. This way the flowerbulb gets the cold period and they can also bloom indoors in winter. For flowering at Christmas, the flowerbulb must be cooled from October 1st and planted no later than December 6th! Of course, this whole process can also be done later for later flowering.

Place them away from fruit. Fruit gives off ethylene gas, which makes the flowers bloom faster.

Care of the hyacinths

Hyacinths generally do not need special nutrition. They get most of their nutrients from the bulb itself. However, if the soil is poor, you can apply some organic fertilizer at planting time or in early spring.

Cut off the spent flower stems, but leave the leaves intact. The leaf will gradually die and return nutrients to the bulb. Avoid removing leaves early as this can affect flower formation for the following year.

Hyacinths are generally winter hardy, but they may need protection in severe frost. A layer of mulch or straw can be applied around the plants to protect the bulbs from freezing.
