Organically grown Four o'clock Flowers

The Mirabilis jalapa, also known as the four o'clock flower, blooms for months from late summer to autumn and grows to a height of approximately 80 centimetres. The plant produces more than 150 flowers per tuber, which are either solid in colour or have a colour variation (see photo 6 and 7), depending on the species and any crossbreeds. They grow in small groups at the ends of the stems and open in the late afternoon, spreading a sweet scent. They bloom until the morning and attract butterflies and bees. The flowers of the four o'clock flower have a funnel shape and grow to a diameter of approximately 3 to 5 cm. They have a velvety soft texture and a subtle shine that makes them extra striking in the evening light. During the day, the flowers are closed to protect themselves from hot summer days (see photo 9). This is why the miracle flower blooms for such a long time.

The leaves of the Mirabilis jalapa are ovate to heart-shaped, with a pointed tip and a smooth, slightly wavy edge. They have a fresh green colour and a soft, slightly glossy texture. The leaves grow alternately on the branched stems and form a full, bushy plant. Thanks to their lush foliage, they give the plant a compact appearance, which provides a beautiful contrast with the brightly coloured flowers. The sturdy stems and dense foliage make the plant not only attractive in borders and flower beds, but also ideal for pots.

How, where and when do I plant organic Mirabilis tubers?

Indoor pre-growth

The Mirabilis jalapa is not frost-hardy. Therefore, the tubers can be started indoors from March. This gives the plants a head start, and the dahlias will bloom earlier. The plants can be placed outside after the Ice Saints (May 15), or even earlier if the weather is good, but be cautious of night frosts, as they will need to be brought back inside at night.

Outside in the garden

If you choose to wait to plant the miracle flowers until after the frost, then this is best done up to and including May 15. From then on, the tubers can be planted in the ground without any danger of frost and they will flower approximately 60 to 90 days later. Plant the tuber just 2 to 3 centimeters under the ground and keep a distance of half a meter from tuber to tuber. The planting time is up to and including June.

Location

A wonder flower prefers a sunny location in a nutritious, water-permeable, preferably calcareous sandy soil. The wonder flower gets many small flowers, so it does not need to be supported, but is preferably planted in a sheltered place.
For pot planting it is best to use a pot that is at least 40 centimetres wide, so that it does not dry out too quickly in summer.

Caring for the Miracle Flower

The Mirabilis jalapa (Miracle flower) is an easy and grateful plant that blooms beautifully with minimal care. Always keep the soil of the miracle flower moist. Too dry soil can cause problems in growth and flowering.

What to do with Mirabilis in the Fall?

The tubers are perennial and will return naturally in mild winters. Protect the tubers that are planted in the open ground with leaves in the winter against light frost. The tubers can also be taken out of the ground and stored frost-free for perennial flowering.

Mirabilis and nutrition

The Mirabilis is a fast growing plant that does not need much nutrition. If necessary, feed the plant several times a year for an optimal result.
For organic potting soil, plant food and other soil improvers we recommend Bio Culture On!

Giving back to nature

In the fall, the remains of the dead plant can be cut off and processed into the soil for nutrition. In this way, you give back to nature and your green bin remains empty for vegetable waste from the kitchen.

Propagating Mirabilis

At the end of the year, the faded flowers produce seeds that look like small grenades (see photo 10). These can easily be picked up from the ground and sown the following year. Unwanted seedlings can easily be removed in the spring.

Origin of the Mirabilis jalapa

The Mirabilis jalapa originates from Mexico and other parts of Central and South America. This plant has been used by indigenous peoples for centuries, both for ornamental purposes and in traditional medicine. In the 16th century, the plant was brought to Europe by Spanish explorers, where it quickly became popular for its fragrant flowers that open in the evening. In Italy, it is also known as "Bella di Notte" (beautiful of the night).
