Biological Yellow Coneflower
The Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm', better known as the yellow coneflower, is a striking and versatile perennial that adds a sunny appearance to any garden. The flowers have radiant, deep golden-yellow petals arranged in a perfect, symmetrical circle. At the center is a striking dark brown, almost black, dome-shaped heart, giving the flowers a playful yet elegant contrast. The petals have a slightly curved shape, with a diameter of about 8 to 12 centimeters. They bloom abundantly, often in groups, and the flowers are also a favorite landing spot for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
This low-maintenance plant is ideal for borders, natural gardens, and as a cut flower. The Rudbeckia thrives in various soil types as long as the soil is well-drained. With its long flowering period from July to October, you can enjoy months of colorful blooms.
How, Where, and When to Plant Coneflower?
The best time to plant coneflower is in spring, from March to May, allowing the plant sufficient time to root before the growing season begins. It loves a sunny spot but can also tolerate partial shade. Ensure the soil is well-drained. Improve heavy clay soil with compost or sand, and optionally add organic material to boost nutrients. Keep a distance of about 30 to 40 centimeters between plants, giving them room to grow without overcrowding. Dig a planting hole slightly larger than the root ball. Fill the hole with soil and press gently. Water generously after planting to help the roots settle well.
Care
Apply a layer of mulch around the plant to retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth. Provide extra water during dry periods, especially in the first growing year. Regularly remove spent flowers (deadheading) to extend the flowering period. In autumn, cut back the stems to about 5–10 cm above the ground after the plant has fully died back.
Provide annual fertilization for optimal results! For organic potting soil, plant food, and other soil improvers, we recommend Bio Kultura!
Propagation
Autumn is a good time to rejuvenate or propagate Rudbeckia by dividing the plant. This keeps the plant vital and prevents it from becoming too large or woody. Dig up the root ball, divide it into several pieces with a sharp spade or knife, and replant the sections with sufficient spacing.
Origin
The Rudbeckia is originally a North American prairie plant. It grows wild in open grasslands, forest edges, and along rivers in the United States and Canada. The genus name Rudbeckia is a tribute to Olof Rudbeck the Younger, a Swedish botanist and one of the teachers of Carl Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy.
The 'Goldsturm' is an improved selection of the original Rudbeckia fulgida. This cultivar was introduced in the 1930s by Heinrich Hagemann, a grower in Germany. 'Goldsturm' means "golden storm" in German, a fitting name given its abundant and bright yellow blooms.
