Organic Darwin hybrid tulips

The Tulipa 'Apricot Impression' is a large-flowered, apricot-colored tulip that turns heads. Initially, the flower is adorned with light pink hues, but after a few days, it changes to an orange-red color like an apricot. When the sun shines on its flowers, they open wide to a width of 15 centimeters, revealing the black star at the center.

The flower stands on a very sturdy flower stem of 50 to 60 centimeters high and is therefore also suitable for use as a cut flower.

How, where and when do I plant a tulip bulb?

Tulip bulbs need a cold period to grow and bloom well. That's why it's important to plant them in the fall, preferably starting in October. By planting them before winter, they'll get the cold they need to sprout in the spring.

When planting, you can follow a simple rule of thumb: plant the bulb at a depth of approximately two to three times its height. The same applies to the spacing, but then along the width of the bulb.

Preferably choose a sunny or partially shaded spot. Tulips prefer fertile, well-drained soil. Loam is ideal. If you have sandy soil, mix some clay minerals into the planting hole to improve its structure. For heavy clay soil, you can add some organic matter, such as compost, to improve drainage. Good drainage is important, because if the bulbs are too wet, they can rot.

Care

Tulip bulbs need a little extra care to bloom beautifully every year. When planting, you can mix some organic fertilizer into the soil, but be careful. Too much fertilizer can lead to excessive leaf growth and less robust flowers. Once the flowers have finished blooming, it's best to cut them off at the top of the stem. This way, all the energy goes back to the bulb instead of to seed formation. Leave the foliage on, however tempting it may be to remove it immediately. The foliage provides new energy through photosynthesis, which the bulb needs to prepare for the next season. Only when the foliage has completely yellowed and withered, usually around July, should you remove it.

If you want the bulbs to bloom large and vigorously again next year, it's advisable to remove them after the foliage dies back. Do this carefully so as not to damage the bulbs. Leave the outer skin on and remove only the loose soil. Then you can let the bulbs dry in a warm, well-ventilated place, such as a shed. In the fall, plant them again following the same instructions.

What if tulip bulbs are left in the ground?

If an organic tulip bulb remains in the ground, you can count on several years of flowering. However, the quality decreases annually, and the risk of diseases like fire blight is significantly higher. Therefore, choose different locations in the garden each year to prevent disease and weakening.
