Organic wild Tulips
The wild tulip Tulipa hageri 'Little Beauty' has pink flowers with blue/white markings on the inside of the petals, so that when the flower is opened it looks as if it still has a blue flower in the center of the flower. The flowers have six petals that form a cup-shaped flower and are on short, sturdy stems of 15 centimeters high.
She produces several flowers per flower bulb and as soon as the sun shines on the flower in March and April, the flowers open with a beautiful, striking star shape, the ends of the pointed petals are slightly bent backwards, with a flower diameter of 5 centimeters.
It is not suitable as a cut flower, but it is a great filler in the border, but also beautiful in a low bowl, combined with blue grapes, for example!
A gem with a unique color combination that is a joy for pollinators such as bees!
How, where and when do I plant Tulipa 'Little Beauty' flowerbulbs?
The 'Little Beauty' flowerbulbs need a cold period. Therefore, plant it in the ground with the pointed side up in the autumn from September to January. For the planting depth, use 2 to 3 times the size of the flowerbulb itself and for the planting distance 2 to 3 times the width of the flowerbulb. In this case that is about 10 centimeters.
Choose a sunny to semi-shady spot in the garden and plant the bulbs in well-drained soil. They prefer a light soil, preferably with average fertility. The soil should not be too heavy or too clayey as this can restrict drainage and cause the bulbs to rot. (It is important that the soil does not remain too moist, especially during the bulbs' dormant period in summer).
Tip: If your soil is naturally heavy or clayey, you can add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and drainage.
Care of the tulip bulbs
Give the 'Little Beauty' a light organic diet in the spring, just after the shoots start to appear. Allow the foliage to die back completely after flowering before removing it. The foliage provides the bulb with energy for the next growing season. The foliage can be cut away after it has turned yellow and wilted, but it also dies relatively quickly on its own.
If the flowerbulbs grow above the ground after a number of years, it is advisable to place them again in the autumn at the correct planting depth. A good guideline is to plant them at a depth of 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb.
Furthermore, it requires little maintenance and has the ability to naturalize. It returns faithfully every year and also multiplies slightly.
Origin
Tulipa hageri is a strong tulip variety with an interesting history. This tulip was first introduced in 1874. The origin of Tulipa hageri lies in the beautiful countries of Greece, specifically Crete, and the area around Izmir in Turkey.
The name 'hageri' is a tribute to Friedrich Hager, a person who played an important role in the introduction of this tulip variety.
The small beautiful Tulipa hageri 'Little Beauty' is a cross between Tulipa hageri and Tulipa humilis .
